Živogošće lies on the southern part of the Makarska Riviera, at the foothill of the Biokovo Mountain. It consists of three smaller, non-coherent places on the coast - Porat - Mala Duba - Blato, and old hamlets along the old road. It is situated 20 km from Makarska, 80 km from Split and 120 km from Dubrovnik. Živogošće has been inhabited since Illyrian and Roman times, the proof of which are  Illyrian stone piles/tombs/ on top of the hill Suzina, and remains of villae rusticae in Mala Duba and Blato. The well known Licinianus epigram from the year 474 BC, comprised of 16 Latin hexameters - the most beautiful example of classical literature - is carved into a living rock above the spring of Pokrivenice on the coast. In the epigram the Roman quaestor Licinianus celebrates the source of „drinking water" which still flows there. The settlement of Živogošće was mentioned in the mid 13th century for the first time.
The Franciscan monastery in Živogošće, founded in 1616, with its rich library and valuable works of art, was the centre of spiritual life and literacy of the region over the centuries. Together with the development of tourism in this area in the last forty years the place has started to get its present shape.

Natural beauties of olive groves and pine woods standing above the pebble beach, 6 km of mutually connected beaches, clean and unpolluted sea, situated at the foothill of a high mountain, the peak Sutvid 1155m, offer tourists a special atmosphere and pleasure stay.
